About Us

The use of cellular phones while driving continues to cause problems on our roads.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) oversees the development of surface transportation that includes:

  • Highways

  • Rail

  • Transit

  • Pedestrian paths

  • Bikeway paths

  • Safe routes to school

It is responsible for the building and maintenance of 8,458 miles of roads, 4,978 bridges, and 3,565 miles of railway. In addition to state highways, NDDOT provides supplemental funding for 99,239 miles of county and rural roads, streets, and trails.

Other efforts that impact the quality of life of the traveling public are the 511 Transportation Information phone line and unique projects designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of the state.

Just over 1,000 full-time employees commit themselves to these projects as we strive to meet our mission of providing a safe and secure transportation system that smoothly moves people and goods.
